- Growing tomatoes upside down?
I have read mixed reviews online but don't have a place to grow in the ground since I live in an apartment so I thought I would try hanging it. I bought a wire hanging basket with the coconut hair lining and a tomato plant. I made a hole in the lining and put the plant in upside down yesterday. Today, I looked out and the plant's stems are bending towards the side closer to the sun. Will the plant grow upside down or did I just waste my money?
A You did the right thing. That is the idea of Topsey Turveys for tomatos. I work for a True Value in Columbia, SC and we plant a tomato plant in one of those every year. I wish you could see this one! I used Miracle Grow moisture control and Scotts slow release 10-10-10 and planted this on 4/28/10 and hung it in our store window. It is 5 feet long now and we have to keep moving it up towards the ceiling. It is HUGE. One thing you have got to remember about how you planted this plant. Don't water it every day. Every other day is plenty, The reason why I say that is if you water it alot your end result will be blossum end rot on your tomatos. With the Topsey Turvey, the commercial says to water it anytime. WRONG. I did what the commercial said to do last year and sure enough, my tomatos were rotting at the bottom. What we had to do was add 2 tablespoons of rock salt to a gallon of water so calcium was getting back into the soil. Result? Cured the problem. You'll love it. Granular fertilizers do wonderful where Miracle Grow is good, but not as good.

If someone has plans on building the box, please let me in on it. My soil is shot and the last three years my plants have started to dry up from the bottoma and the leaves are turning yellow. I will grow the plants upside next year. Thanks Byrl bgjaa@yahoo.com
A My neighbor puts his in big buckets with holes in the bottom for the plant to fit through and hangs them from a structure of 4 x 4 pressure treated fence posts cemented in the ground (2 posts up from ground and 1 across mounted to them with a deck bracket). Then cover them with a net to keep the birds from eating them. Also, be sure to water often and feed once a week or every 2 weeks with tomato plant food. Oh yeah, and make sure you pick them before they get fully red,(ripen in window).
