Tomatoes are by far the most popular edible vegetable or fruit grown in gardens- US plant nurseries and seed websites stock many more varieties of tomatoes than any other vegetable or fruit. The popularity of heirloom varieties has further fueled interest. Gail Harland has been growing tomatoes in her garden for nearly twenty years. Experimenting every season, she's now grown over 60 international tomato varieties. Trevor Cole started working at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa in 1967, initially on the adaptation of native flora to cultivation. FAQ and Ideas for Hanging Tomato Plant
- What is the proper way to trim a hanging tomato plant?
I have a tomato post with over-hanging vines; as the tomatoes get ripe, I pick them. The vines are getting too long though. What is the correct way to trim them without damaging or killing the plant?

A Trim some all the way back to the main, vertical branch to thin them out and for larger fruit; and trim some of the branches back to the next closest flower. Also cut off any browned or damaged leaves. I like to cut the bottom branches off also so that they are not resting on the soil......
- Can a hanging tomato plant stay alive all year round and produce tomatoes?
My mom bought me an awesome Hanging Tomato plant. I thought about it and I am wondering if I brang it inside during the winter and kept it by a window will it stay alive enough to produce Tomatoes again the next year? Or can they even do that. We have to put nutrients in the soil already since it is a hanging plant, I would continue to put nutrients in the soil.

A At the end of the fruiting season, cut it back to about 6-8 inches. It should grow new shoots. Take the tips off the cuttings from the original about 4 inches or so long and stick those in pots with dirt those will make new plants you will have for next year if the original doesn't keep. They are really an annual, but you can keep perpetuating the original, the nurseries do it this way...yours probably started out a cutting as well.
