How To Plant Tomatoes In Pots Faq

Question about planting tomatoes in a pot?

Alright, I don't really have any ground space to put a tomato plant in so I was just going to plant one in a pot I have. I was just wondering how large the pot should be for the plant to have enough room to fully grow?

That's the only way I grow tomatoes. They're called "patio tomatoes." The larger the pot the more and larger the tomatoes.

tiny flies in soil of plant?

My indoor potted tomato plant has a few tiny flies that jump around the soil. Any ideas how to handle?

Those are fungus gnats. There are insecticides to kill them with. But the easiest control is to let the surface dry out completely between waterings. They thrive if the surface is constancely moist.

How do I grow tomatoes in pots?

We don't have much of a yard. We have a space that is probably a 5 foot by 5 foot square that gets a lot of sun. How many tomato plants do you think I could grow in this area? About how many tomatoes can I expect to get per plant? When is the best time to start growing them? I live on the California Central Coast, so the weather is relatively mild. It generally doesn't get lower than 60 degrees in the daytime.

Find a big pot. About 2 to 3 feet across, about 2 feet deep. Put in your rich organic soil, 3 to 4 inches from the top, then put in about 3 to 5 starter plants, then put in your stakes. My brother used bamboo, and bowed it over to the other side, then tyed them together were they meet. Seems to work well, or use the metal ones sell at the stores..Oh I live in Florida, so they grow them allmost year round, but any time after the last freeze, is a good time to plant, and when it starts to bear fruit, do not water the plant, just the soil, the can get bottom end rot.
