Tomato Planters Faq

Ken asks…
What is a good fertilizer for tomato's?
I purchased a topsy turvy tomato planter, and it says not to use a fertilizer with a high nitrogen number, What is considered a "high nitrogen" number? I bought some Miracle-Gro and it has a nitrogen level of 24%, Is this to high?
Staff Member Answers:
I learned that when you plant your tomatoes, use a fertilizer specially formulated for tomatoes. And then only use it once, when planting it. If you continue fertilizing, it'll make the plant bigger but it won't produce any more or any bigger tomatoes.
If you don't want to or can't afford to buy a separate fertilizer, check the ratios on the label. If it says 5-10-10 or 10-10-10, you're good to go. The first number is nitrogen, which is what you were asking about.
